The total population of Kandy district is 1,484,469 (2019 census) with the estimated population for 2019 being 1,502,283. The urban sector of Kandy district comprises of Kandy Municipal Council, Kadugannawa Urban Council, Gampola Urban Council, Nawalapitiya Urban Council and Wattegama Urban Council. Kandy Muncipal Council spreads over 3 divisional secretary’s divisions; namely Kandy Four Gravets & Gangawata Korale, Pathadumbara and Harispattuwa. The population of urban areas is 176,157 and it is 12.2 percent of the total population. And estate population is 98,048
Kandy district has a land area of 1916.2 square kilometers (sq.km). It has a population density of 715 persons per sq.km (2019).The population density of the urban area is 4,083 persons per sq.km.
There are 23 MOH areas in kandy district. The highest population is reported from yatinuwara MOH area and it is 114,437. The population of Ududumbara MOH area is 24,290 and is the MOH division with the lowest population., There are 73 primary health care institutions, 2 secondary care institutions, 3 tertiary care institutions & 9 special units/campaigns in the Kandy district in 2019.
